What does it mean to be stylish? The dictionary definitions claim that someone who is stylish is ‘fashionably elegant and sophisticated.’ Or they could be ‘neat, confident, and skillful.’ Two different definitions that aren’t totally dissimilar. The overall consensus is, as we all know, that being stylish is a positive thing.
Style means different things to different people. Everyone has a preferred style of dressing. Everyone has their own idea of what a stylish home would look like. And everyone has a different opinion on what hobbies are stylish and which aren’t. But personal opinion and the general public opinion do differ. And it is up to the court of public opinion to ultimately decide if something is stylish or not.
The most stylish hobbies seem to change very irregularly. For the longest time soccer was the most stylish hobby on the planet. But we believe it has finally been dethroned. But not by what you would expect. Today we are here to make the case for gaming. And we will prove to you that video gaming has become the most stylish hobby on the planet!
From Geek To Chic
It wasn’t that long ago that gaming culture, and geek culture as a whole, was confined to the fringes of society. People in these cultures were often ridiculed by the general public. Depicted badly in TV shows and movies. Mocked relentlessly for their passions.
But geek culture has slowly been moving into the mainstream. The Marvel cinematic universe has changed the face of the movie industry and given comic books a more mainstream appeal. Video games have caught the public eye more so than any other part of geek culture. Moving away from being a niche hobby and becoming the most popular pastime on the planet.
And it is no surprise that this has happened. Gaming has been a staple part of human culture since the time of our ancient ancestors. It was only the digital aspect of video games that made it seem so geeky. But games have always been a way for people to connect with one another. A way to sharpen our minds and strengthen our bonds. Think of chess. One of the oldest and most complex games out there. It is still going strong to this day. Card games as well have never faded from the public eye. Poker, blackjack, even solitaire is a classic game that has stood the test of time. And many of the classic board and card games have now been translated into digital format.
The Rise Of Gaming
But how did video gaming go from being seen as geeky to becoming so stylish? The main driving force was Esports. The professional sector of gaming started to increase in popularity. Thanks primarily to games like League Of Legends and Dota 2. These competitions started to draw a huge crowd. Showing people that video games are more than just a geeky hobby. They can be a fully competitive sport that requires a high level of physical fitness and insane reaction times to master.
We also started to see more titles being made to appeal to casual gamers. Nintendo made the biggest push in this regard. Titles like Mario Kart and Mario Party are household names these days. Games that are easy to learn and great to play with friends and family soon opened up the world of gaming to more people.
Twitch also played a huge part in making gaming into a stylish hobby. Suddenly people’s favorite YouTubers and influencers were livestreaming their gaming sessions. And people love to copy their favorite celebrities. Live streaming is now considered a viable career option. With thousands of people turning their hand at making gaming into their profession.
At the same time we started to see more celebrities discussing their love of gaming. Henry Cavill has openly spoken about his love of video games and Warhammer 40k. And we have now seen gaming personalities becoming major stars. Mathew Mercer, the DM on Critical Role, has turned D & D from being a niche geek hobby into one of the most popular entertainment franchises on the planet!
And gaming popularity is showing no signs of slowing down either. Every year we see new titles like Bauldur’s Gate 3 sweep social media into a frenzy. Gaming related movies and TV shows are all the rage and likely will be for some time yet. Proving that gaming is the most stylish hobby on the planet!
